Purpose:
By Mierra Phillips
My purpose for interviewing teachers that currently teach at Handley High School is for me to view their opinions about the 70/30 grading system and the exemption policy. I personally don't agree with either of them because in the grading system, tests count too much and quizzes and classwork don't count enough. Here's what a few teachers have to say.
Questions:
1.) Did you attend Handley High School while growing up? If so, how was the grading system then different from what it is?
2.) Do you think the exemption policy should be discontinued?
3.) How do you feel about the grading system?
4.) Do you think teachers should have the ability to create their own grading system?
Answers:
- Kelly Seymour- English Teacher
1.) No, I did not attend HHS while growing up.
2.) Absolutely because we don't prepare our students for true college life. College doesn't exempt you, and you don't know how to study comprehensively.
3.) I do not like the grading system at all, and I do not give that many tests at all because I give them papers to write as test grades.
4.) Yes.
- Mandy Bonner- Math Teacher
1.) Yes, and the grading system was very similiar.
2.) I think the seniors should take their exams to better themselves for college.
3.) I disagree with it, but I can deal with it.
4.) Yes, but should be underguidance of the principal.
- Kelli Hendon- Guidance Counselor
1.) Yes, but we didn't have 70/30, just regular grades and averages.
2.) No I like it because without it, alot of students would not attend schools.
3.) I think there is too much weight placed on test grades.
4.) Yes, to some extent depends on type of work.
