Paid to Play?Erin wise
Should college athletes get paid to play? This has always been a hot topic in college athletics. A recent study by a group of representing college athletes say, yes, college athletes should get paid. This study claims that the average football player is worth $120,000 and college basketball players are worth $265,000. These players bring in millions to these colleges but most live below the poverty line. They are pushed to the limit and they are forced to endure many of the risk of getting an injury.
Many think that these athletes are paid with getting a scholarship, when actually scholarships are more of a lure to get athletes to come to that college. They think that college athletes should play for the love of the game because if we start paying them their motives for playing might change. While these athletes are practicing and putting time into their sports, other students are out getting jobs. Players only get $200-$250 for living expenses which is only a small percentage of what students who have time to work make.
On the other hand, these athletes are given the opportunity to play in top of the line facilities while getting free education, free meals, and free housing. Student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body too. Paying student-athletes would provide athletes with an incentive to stay in school and complete their degree programs, opposed to leaving early for professional leagues. People who believe that athletes should be paid think that this would solve the problem of schools paying the athletes to come to their university illegally.
