“ Free Education?”
By Urvi Patel and Jessie Tooker
An average student in high school does not really notice how much money their parents give to the school every year. Schools
t-shirts, club fees, class fees, field trips…the total adds up! Just as a junior in high school, I have spent over fifty dollars on just t-shirts, more than thirty on class and club fees, and also a few dollars here and there for small “high school necessities”. A typical junior has bought a Leatherman jacket and/or a class ring, which together could cost more than five hundred dollars because it’s a commemoration of their four years in high school.
This year, at Handley High School, we have many seniors that have bought every single item that the school was selling…from class rings to graduation announcements. However, there are also some seniors that cannot afford to buy all of these so called “high school necessities”, despite the fact of how badly they want to purchase them. Graduation announcements are very costly too, yet there are a few seniors that obtain every single item in the catalog. I have asked a few seniors why they have bought all that they did. One senior says that in the last four years of high school, he has bought almost everything from t-shirts to finally the senior graduation announcements. Senior year is the most expensive year, yet seniors still spend money here and there like it’s nothing.
I asked one senior why he bought all that he did, his reply was “So in twenty years from now, I could look at my class ring, Leatherman jacket, or even my announcements and remember how my high school years were. I got everything for memory.”
A few more seniors say that even though it was all costly, the main aspect about purchasing almost all the items is to be able to look back ever so often and ponder upon all their high school memories. However, there are a few seniors that cannot afford to purchase all the items.
“It’s okay that I didn’t get everything, but I knowing that I was a student at Handley High means more than anything to me”, one senior told me. Another senior said, “In the past four years, I’ve spent a ton of money because of just the class and club fees, and so on. Not having the money to buy the class ring and Leatherman jacket did make me feel bad because I notice that many of my senior classmates have either one or both.” Whether having the ability to afford all the “high school necessities” or not, high school is still very expensive! Just add up the total at the end of senior year! :)
