MY purpose
By Monica Roundtree
My purpose for interviewing students that attend Handley High School is too see how they feel about the exemption policy and grading system at Handley High School. Since many of them don’t have a chance or are afraid to speak out and be heard, I’m giving them a chance now! I don’t agree with the grading system because tests are counted as 70% of your grade and classwork is 30%. I feel it should be 65-35. Tests should be counted as 65 percent of your grade and quizzes, homework and classwork should count as 35 percent of your grade.
Questions:
1.)Do you feel that the exemption policy should be discounted from Handley High? Why or why not?
2.)How do you feel about our grading system?
Nikeisha Smedley - 10th grade.
She feels that we need a new policy where it states that we can miss as many days as we want as long as you're continuing to keep up your grades. She said that she hates our 70-30 grading system; tests count ENTIRELY too much and classwork doesn't.
Erin Wise - 9th grade.
She said that we should continue with the exemption policy as it is because it is a way of rewarding the people who actually come to school and earn good grades. She feels that our grading system should be based on a 60-40 grading system.
Quateshia Flourney - 11th grade.
She states, "If you're keeping up your grades then your tardies and absense shouldn't count against you. So it's kind of like their punishing us for missing school or being tardy but we're still managing to keep up the good grades. Our 70-30 grading system SUCKS! Tests count way too much and classwork/homework doesn't count enough."
Ethan Corbett - 9th grade.
Ethan actually likes the exemption policy and feels that it gives somebody an award for having good attendance and making good grades. And he loves the grading syste because tests count just enough for people who actually study and listen in class.
