The 27 Club Have you ever heard of the the 27 Club? It definitely nothing like the school clubs we are in or the clubs we used to have with our friends when we were little. The 27 Club is a group of famous musicians that have died at the young age of 27. At this point in time there are 32 members of the 27 Club. Most of them died in a horrible way due to their explosive life style that eventually destroyed them.
One of the most recently added members to the club was Amy Winehouse. She died on July 23, 2011. She was found around four in the morning at her London home by the London Ambulance Service but they could not revive her. Winehouse had struggled with drugs and alcohol for a long time. The coroner reported that her blood-alcohol level five times more than the legal driving limit. Having so much alcohol in her is what is believed to have caused her sudden death. Some of the most famous members of this group all died within a two year time span. The first was Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. He died on July 3rd of 1969. That night he was found at the bottom of a pool, motionless. His death was reported to be caused by drug and alcohol abuse, but ideas of murder were soon formed. The second to die was Jimi Hendrix from the Band of Gypsies. He died on September 18th 1970. His girlfriend at the time, Monika Dannemann, claimed that he had taken nine of her prescribed sleeping pills. The normal douse for this medicine was half of a pill. The 3rd was Janis Joplin of Big Brother and the Holding Company. She was found on October 4th 1970. The official cause of death was an overdose of heroin combined with alcohol consumption. The last of these four deaths was Jim Morrison of The Doors. He was discovered in his Paris apartment on July 3rd 1971. There was no autopsy done and many questions remain about his cause of death. The biggest question still remains about all of these deaths. Is there a curse of the 27 Club or is all of this a really messed up coincidence? When the legendary Robert Johnson was killed at age 27, it is believed that his death is what started the curse. It is said that Johnson sold his soul for the ability to play the guitar by making a crossroads deal with the devil. In 1938, he was given a bottle of wine which had been poisoned and since that day many musicians have succumb the curse. Other people believe in something called casual attribution. This is when a person or group attributes outcomes to a particular cause. When a tragic event occurs, like the death of a young person, they try to find a way to make since of it but, when they cannot we find ways to make since of it. Whether the cause of these tragic deaths is from a curse or just the way these people lived, they are greatly missed. |
