I started reading Sarah Dessen’s books during the summer of 2011. I was hooked to her novels after the first. My most recent read was Dreamland. I was almost just as pleased with it as I was with the first book I read by her. Dreamland is a difficult novel to get into, but after a while it gets better and I found myself not wanting to put the book down. I found myself on the edge of my seat many times while I was reading this novel. I believe this book reveals the secret life of many teens today. It has many lessons to teach teenagers about relationships. I also think that it will teach girls that are abused that they are not alone, to not to be afraid to speak up.
This novel is about Caitlin, a young girl in high school who finds herself in some tight situations after her sister Cassandra runs away. While she struggles to fill her sister’s spot, she joins the cheerleading squad and falls for “bad boy” Rogerson. She soon realizes why he has such a bad reputation. The more time she spends with him the harder she falls for him, but she also discovers the real him. Falling for Rogerson only makes it harder to fill in for her sister; eventually, she stops trying to fill in for her sister. She gets in way over her head and things start spiraling out of control. She feels like she cannot get up.
