By Urvi Patel
Bones are not only used to maintain structure to the body, to move the body, to protect other organs...they actually serve more purposes. As a child, many might have watched The Flintstones. I, for example, used to love the show and would impatiently wait for it to come on each day. Pebbles, one of the characters from the cartoon, wears a bone in her hair.
Along with hair accessories, bones are also used in:
-Making corsets. The boning supports the desired shape and prevents wrinkling of the corset fabric.
-George Washingtons teeth. Many people believed that his false teeth were wooden. Using laser scans, researchers have found traces of gold, ivory, lead, human and animal teeth . Yes! Human and animal teeth!
-The bones of whales are used for building material since their bones are quite sturdy and strong.
-Bone char, a material that is made when animal’s bones are charred, is used to remove fluoride from water and filter aquamarine water. It is also used to sugar, that it usually preferred by people with dietary concerns such as vegetarians. Vegetarians? Yes, it’s least likely expected that someone who does not each anything carnivorous, eats bone char…the material that is made from bones of animals.
-Most people do not know that bone marrow can be eaten! According to a recipe online, bone marrow taste best when it is roasted and sprinkled with sea salt, eaten with some toast points, or even just by itself. People say bone marrow is not only delicious, but it is also nutritious.
